COVINA - Dancing is kind of like an onion - peel away the layers of nervousness and self doubt and you often end up with a pretty good dancer.
No one knows this better than Lucille Bell, co-owner and dance instructor at Room 2 Dance. Bell and her husband, Charley, opened the Covina dance studio in October and business has been picking up ever since.
“Some of the people who come in here are very vulnerable and nervous about making mistakes on the dance floor,” she said. And some of these people have high positions or careers. They think, `Oh, I’ll be terrible at this.’ Some of them are even shaking, but 95 percent of the time they’re not that bad.”
Room 2 Dance offers ballroom and social dance classes. Private lessons and group instruction are available in a variety of styles, including salsa, swing and tango, among others.
Many students start with group classes because they’re less expensive. But once they decide to take their dancing to the next level with private lessons, it can be challenging to break bad habits picked up along the way.
Private lessons help build confidence and good habits from the start. Students in private sessions also get immediate feedback and typically progress at a faster rate.
Bell, who has taught dance for 14 years, said the classes provide students with much more than instruction in dance.
“Some people might be single and want to meet other people,” she said. “Maybe being social
isn’t something they are good at. They make friendships here. We have a good time by switching partners, so you’re in close contact with someone from the opposite sex. Dancing is a good little ice-breaker.”
Michael Kaparos, 43, of Glendora, is taking both private and group classes at Room 2 Dance.
“I just wanted to get out of the house and do something different,” he said. “It makes you feel more confident so you’re not dancing with two left feet.”
Josie Silva says her dance lessons at Room 2 Dance have helped her as well.
“I’m a recent widow and I needed to get out and do some things and have fun,” the 69-year-old Glendora resident said. “I was very intimidated at first but I’ve come a long way.”
Bell said she starts students out with the basics - the walking step, the side step and the rock step, which allows a dancer to shift their weight much like being in a rocking chair.
“From there you can do all of your dance moves,” she said. “We also offer field trips and social outings every other month. We’ve gone swing dancing together and we have a country western one coming up.”
Charley Bell said he spent years trying to persuade his wife to open her own dance studio.
“We were saving up money for a home, but we decided we could bite the bullet and go for this,” he said. “If you look at our website we describe ourselves as `The Risk Takers!”’
